Manga for Grown Ass Women

Aug 16

This cover features the work of one of the most successful female manga creators ever, Rumiko Takahashi. This issue of Animerica talks about some of her most popular works (before days of Inuyasha), and was printed back when Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura were becoming popular among anime fans here in the U.S.

Publication: Animerica
Date: April 1993
About The Magazine:
From Wiki:

Animerica was a quarterly digest published by Viz Media. It initially started as a monthly magazine featuring reviews of anime and manga titles, as well as related works. After a preview issue was released in November 1992, the magazine’s first issue was released in February 1993 with a March 1993 cover date. The magazine originally featured articles and reviews on manga, anime, and related media, as well as manga preview chapters. In 1998, Animerica Extra was launched as a manga anthology which eventually focused specifically on shōjo titles. It was canceled in 2004.

Animerica was one of the first professional anime and manga magazines released in the United States, and one of the most popular in the 1990s. In 2004, it had a circulation of 45,000 readers, but low sales and high competition from NewType USA resulted in the essential cancellation of the original magazine and its reformatting as a free digest. 100 copies of the first issue of the free digest were sent to 1,000 Walden books and Border stores.

Bon Odori: Dance for the Dead

August is the month of Obon and many Japanese vacationers will be enjoying the holiday festivals.  One traditional activity enjoyed by festival attendees is the Bon Dance, or Bon Odori.  This folk dance is performed during Obon nights in Japan as a way to welcome back the spirits of dead. The style of Bon Odori can vary from region to region.  A typical dance will involve people lining up in a circle around a wooden tower or scaffold called a Yagura and dancing either clockwise or counter-clockwise.  Even though this is the most common formation, in some areas celebrators may choose to simply dance down the streets in a straight line.  Some Bon dancers may incorporate fans or Kachi-Kachi, small wooden clappers, into their dances.  The type of music played during the dance also varies throughout Japan, often reflecting the personality of a particular region.  For example Tokushima is known for its “Awa Odori” or fool’s dance, while “Goshu Ondo” is popular in the Shiga prefecture.
